Born in Germany, Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Thudichum moved to London in 1853, where he practiced as a laryngologist. He was also interested in chemical research, initially of urine and bile, later of the human brain. Thudichum lectured at St. Thomas's Hospital in London and was the first director of its laboratory of chemistry and pathology(1865-71).
